Somehow, I felt this day was coming when Donald Trump would surrender to authorities, get fingerprinted and his mug shot taken just like any other accused criminal, and appear in court for his arraignment.
Donald Trump has embarrassed our country – again.
Now I understand that Trump, like any other citizen, is innocent until proven guilty, and the burden of proof is on the shoulders of prosecutors. Guilty or innocent is not my point. My point is here is a former President of the United States for the first time being indicted. I can only wonder what our allies and the rest of the world think about this.
In New York, Trump faces 34 – yes, 34 – felony charges of falsifying business records in the first degree. Among those charges, Trump is accused of giving hush money to Stormy Daniels the day before the 2016 election where he allegedly didn’t want this leaked before the election.
When Trump Was President
Remember when Trump was the face of the United States as president, and he represented us in one embarrassing moment after another? For instance:
In the second presidential debate in 2016, he threatened to jail Hillary Clinton if elected.
His decision to drop the “mother of all bombs” on Afghanistan in April 2017.
The time when he denied German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s handshake at a meeting in March 2017.
His statements about the August 2017 Charlottesville rally where he said there were “good people” on both sides.
Some people say it’s time to make Trump the example that a president is not above the law. We’ll see about that. But on the other side, those who support Trump no matter what have disappointed me.
“President Trump will defeat the latest witch-hunt, defeat Joe Biden, and will be sworn in as President of the United States of America in January 2025,” said House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik.
Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said the indictment was politically motivated. “Equal justice under the law unless you’re a Republican running for president,” he said.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, compared Trump to Jesus Christ. “Trump is joining some of the most incredible people being arrested. Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison. Jesus was arrested and murdered.”
Unfortunately, outrageous statements are what Greene is all about, and it’s a pattern among many Republicans.
It Wasn’t Bragg’s Decision
Meanwhile, the Republicans are going after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who happens to be a Democrat. Bragg led the investigation into potential criminal acts by Trump. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California said Bragg will be held “accountable for his work against Trump.” Added Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Kentucky, Bragg should be “disbarred and removed from office.”
Here is one thing the Republicans are forgetting. Bragg had to sell this to the grand jury. He did not have the final say in these charges. No matter what you think, indicting a former US president is no easy task. This is a live bombshell, and the grand jury had to tread lightly. The decision to indict was a challenging task for these members.
Are you telling me that 23 grand jury members got together and decided to find any way to screw over Donald Trump? Do you honestly believe that these members somehow have a Democrat-type agenda?
Have you ever been in a room with 22 other people to talk about whatever the day’s subject will be? And what are the chances that all 23 people would agree with how the discussion was going?
You expect us to believe that this happened, that they all got together to conspire against Trump? Even the most unreasonable people in this country would have difficulty explaining that.
Guess Who’s the Victim
In response, Trump is trying to portray himself as the victim. At his gathering in Florida hours after his arrest, Trump talked extensively about Joe and Hunter Biden, election interference, the borders, Afghanistan, and how we’re close to World War III. He finally came around to discuss the indictment, and this “fake case” was brought up for the upcoming election.
Trump often uses the term “witch hunt” to fend off potential investigations against him. This tactic had worked for him so far. But things are getting serious now, and some things he says in public may not fly in a courtroom.
Thirty-four felony counts and a maximum sentence of 136 years. That was the conclusion from 23 members of the Manhattan Grand Jury. Maybe this could be the final embarrassment Americans have endured with Donald Trump.
